Description
Local ranchers call the Snipes Rain Birds because of the sound made by their tail feathers as they are diving straight down following a high accent searching insects during the day and night. They often lay close the the ground where they nest and lay quietly unless flushed. They are not often seen with their camouflaged color unless sitting on a fence post. I enjoy listening to them in the spring when they often make their whoo-shing noise flying at remarkable speeds both ascending and diving.
