Description
California Towhee,Bird,Order-Passeriformes,Family-Emberizidae,Species-Papilo crissalis,Lenth-9inches,Wingspan-11.5 inches,Point Loma,San Diego,CA.
I played around with this friendly gregarious sparrow one afternoon in January while he hopped around feeding and displaying himself for my amusement. Having left my field guide in my motor home on the Colorado River near Parker Arizona I picked up a version the American Museum of Natural Historys Birds of North America to help me in identification, which I had been looking forward to acquiring for some time. Unlike the definition plate in the book this bird had a ruffled and tufted head making it look a lot like a Canyon Towhee especially with the jagged dark streaks on the neck but it lacked a black spot on the breast and the color of the eye were those of a California Towhee , so unless someone can provide a more authoritative text that is what I am calling him
