Description
This picture is available in two dimensions and images.
The California Condor is largest flying bird in North America. Native Americans revere them calling them Thunderbirds, because of the sound their wings make. Condor #73 was hatched under the supervision of San Diego & Los Angeles Zoo breeding and wild life project. The California Condor in the 1800s range extended from Canada to Mexico. When their numbers diminished to the point of near extinction in the 1980s exhaustive efforts were conducted by numerous agencies nationwide to save this special and important species of the Vulture Family. After establishing a breeding program through a number of national agencies wild condors were captured, their eggs incubated and reared in captivity at the San Diego and Los Angeles Zoos the offspring were released. The management, release, and supervision in the wild, (Grand Canyon region of Arizona), is undertaken by Peregrine Foundation. It has been determined that the ingestion of lead from pellets and bullets from carrion eaten is the principle cause of their near extinction. For a general informative summary about this species start at the San Diego Zoo, ( www.sandiegozoo.org/animalbytes/t-condor.html ).
