Description
Characterized by its long neck folding back in flight the Great Blue is the largest and most widespread of all herons in North America. During breeding season this bird sports a long black occipital plume on its crown. This is a shy bird, often fleeing quickly from humans and predators. Like many herons and egrets their populations were almost eliminated in the mid to late 1800s and early 1900s due to the popularity of their feathers as adornments on ladies hats in cities particularly in Europe. This lead to the establishment of federal protection and the establishment of the Fish and Wild Life Service as well as our National Park system undertaken by Teddy Roosevelt.
The Yampa Valley is home to a large number of these beautiful birds in the spring, summer, and fall of the year. They make their home along the Yampa and Elk Rivers feeding in ponds on the open meadows and nesting high in Cottonwood Trees along the riparian ecology of the rivers.
