Description
Mating Red Winged Black Bird
Displaying his red wing on his perch this Red Wing is calling for a mate. Ah, spring time!
Red Wing Black Bird (Icteridae, Agelaius phoeniceus), Wing Span 12 to 14 inches, Length 7.5 to 9.5 inches, Believed to be one of the most common land birds in North America. They aggressively defend their nests.
Winters here are bitter on the steps of Elk Mountain. In fact they are too bitter for our most birds. Maybe theyre smarter than us in this regard. This beautiful critter however shows up on schedule in the Valley around the first of March every year.
