Description
"Making hay when the sun shines is more than just a saying in Northwest Colorado. For local ranchers a16.8nd others in the rural communities surrounding the Yampa Valley and elsewhere Hay season stretches between Mid July and Mid September. This picture shows several large irrigated meadows bordering the Elk River with Elk Mountain as a back drop. Dry land hay in the Elk River Valley where there is no irrigation is available is baled in July. While not as plentiful as irrigated hay it contains one of the highest levels of protein in the State of Colorado, generally 11 or 12 percent. The irrigated meadows are cut and baled after the meadows are allowed to dry out for a week or so beginning in the second week in August, or after the perennial July rains. A fifteen or seventeen hundred pound bale of hay will fetch $115 to $125 for a 1500 to 1750 pound bail even when there is a bumper crop. Comparatively this is equivalent to an once of pure Gold.
